There is chinese food, and then there is Taste of China. Now, while it is true they take a while longer sometimes to cook your food (the reason why others have given it a lower rating), the extra wait tells me they are making things fresh just for me and the way I like it. I became a fan of this place back in my Iowa days, and 8 years later the food is just as awesome and full of flavor. My brother, who still lives in IC, is a big fan of this place as well and it was so nice to be greeted and recognized by the guy working the front counter. He is always at this location and remembers who we like our food prepared and served and is always courteous to us. It is worth mentioning that in the dozens of times we have been to TOC, our food comes out hot, fresh and usually within 10 minutes of ordering it... simply awesome. My favorite dish has got to be their house special lo-mein, as it is loaded with pork, shrimp and chicken for about $8. Having said that, the crabmeat rangoons, the special fried rice and their BBQ spare ribs are AMAZING as well. I should mention this... make sure you get the BBQ spare ribs well done since sometimes they are a little chewy. If you are looking for a place with great chinese food, fast service and an authentic feel please do yourself a favor a visit Taste of China. With two locations in town they are never too far away!

While standing at the front counter, I saw one of the cooks in the back pick his nose, and then touch the inside of a take out container with the same finger as he opened it.

Okay, so it's Americanized Chinese food, but oh boy, it is ever good! No matter what you order or when you call, the telephone order taker says it will be ready in "about ten minutes," and surprisingly it is! Freshly prepared, quality ingredients, reasonable prices, and very popular with people from China...can't beat it. I like the sweet and sour chicken with lots of all-white meat quickly fried perfectly crisp and served with flavorful fried rice containing yet more chicken and vegetables. The vegetable egg rolls are excellent. Quality is consistent. Everyone has a preferred style of Chinese food, and this is mine. I like all the locations, but the Coralville one is my favorite. I've tried many local Chinese restaurants, but the food at Taste of China keeps me coming back. Don't come for the atmosphere or decor, come for the food and you won't be disappointed.

The TOC in Coralville has the freshest food. Sadly, no roast pork - fresh only. The TOC on Linn St. "precooks" their food for busy times(dinner). Reheated and tossed in Gen Tso's sauce. That's why they are the greasiest and hardest to digest Chinese food in town. The TOC on First Ave is much better, has roast pork, but out of the way.

I have never written a review, but this was so bad that I had to. Worst Chinese food I have ever had. I have tried it 4 times (I work downtown and it's close), a different dish each time and it never gets better. Yesterday I had their beef and noodle soup and I was so grossed out by the "beef" that I couldn't eat more than a few bites. The beef was mostly tendons and fat. DISGUSTING. I know it's cheap, but that doesn't mean it has to be awful..

Good food, fast, inexpensive, usually pretty happy with Taste of China. The crab rangoon is a little smokey-flavored, don't know what's up with that but I'm not a huge fan. My Chinese fiance was happy with her lo mein and soup. The go-to place for Chinese food on the East side of IC.

Growing up on the east has spoiled my asian taste buds - that being said I wanted to say that Taste of China is your run of the mill americanized chinese take out place. The woman running the counter was really nice and my food was out within 10 minutes. The egg roll was just okay but my sesame chicken was decent and my rice was cooked perfectly. All and all, the food ok and priced fairly.

You and I are old friends. I know that when I stop in, you always have just the right thing to satisfy my mood, even if I usually order the same thing...chicken lo mein never disappoints. You are easy on the wallet, too....a lunch special plus a drink for less than $10! Your refrigerator is always fully stocked with a pitcher of water and a dish of hot chili sauce for my table. All that and ready in less than 15 minutes...(sigh) -1 star only because although amusing, the tiny little faucet in the bathroom for the industrial-sized sink makes your hands touch the sink as you wash them.

After growing up in the land of little Taipei (Monterey Park, CA) and San Jose, I've concluded that Taste of China is the best deal for Chinese food in IC. Its cheap and decent. I still crave the authentic Chinese food, but this chain does its job in curbing my homesick feelings. I'd also recommend trying the different Taste of China around town. The one in Coralville appears to be cleaner.

Very good food, both in quality and quantity, reasonable prices, usually very fast service. There are 3-4 tables in this small restaurant -- we've always called in an order and picked it up, as it seems most customers do. Restaurant is very small. One caveat -- when we call in an order, we're always told "ten minutes!" Usually the order is ready in 15 minutes, which really is pretty good ... but occasionally it can stretch out to 20-30, and still while you're waiting you hear them tell others calling in orders that it will be ten minutes.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
